As I wrote earlier this year, the battle between American Marines and the Islamic Taliban in Marjah, Afghanistan has, in MSNBC’s words, “become a microcosm of the war itself“. In other words, the United States is mired in a nearly 10-year conflict predicated on self-sacrifice, not on the nation’s self-interest, with no clear military purpose. Back on February 13, I forecast that U.S. soldiers were marching into a deathtrap. In a post published just days later, I observed that “our Armed Forces at Marjah are being slowly blown to bits, one by one, solider by soldier.” Judging by the latest reports, the outrage continues.
