Groupthink

The National Organization for Women (NOW) has endorsed Democrat Jerry Brown for governor of California after release of an audiotape in which he or someone in his campaign called Republican opponent and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman a “whore”. A few years ago, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) endorsed the crudely offensive Adam Sandler movie about a fireman pretending to be gay, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and other groups, such as the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), routinely take positions counter to the self-interest of individuals whose interests they claim to promote. It should be clear by now that so-called special interest groups based on factors and/or characteristics essentially beyond one’s control, such as age, race, sex, or sexual orientation, are inherently flawed and, arguably, should not exist. I think the world, including women, gays, blacks, and the elderly, would be better off without these groups, which typically stand for nothing but their own aggrandizement. People should be judged as individuals.
